Government Response to AMAT Report - Historic Day for Autism Support in Nova Scotia
Wednesday April 13, 2011
As many of you probably already know, the Government of Nova Scotia responded to the Report on "Lifespan Needs for Persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder" at a press conference at the Provincial Autism Centre on April 12, 2011.
This truly was a historic day for our community. We are grateful that our provincial government is committed to an Autism Strategy for Nova Scotia, and for the increased support to early intervention andthe EIBI program. Significant announcements were also made in Education and Justice around Project Lifesaver, which will have positive impacts on many families and people living with autism in Nova Scotia. This is a great foundation to build upon.
Also of great significance,Premier Darrell Dexter announced thegovernment’s “Autism Spectrum Disorder Action Plan” which focuses on five main themes, including: intervention services for families with pre-school children, supports for school-aged children, supports for adults, training to raise skills and awareness, and partnerships to support programming and services. We welcome the provincial government’s commitment to these five pillars, supporting the lifespan needs of individuals and families living with Autism Spectrum Disorder. This is certainly a step in the right direction, and we look forward to seeing this Action Plan become a reality, and government’s commitment to report back in a year on the progress.
