SibsCONNECT
SibsCONNECT is a play-based and educational program for children ages 9–13 who have a sibling who is Autistic or self-identifies as Autistic. The program focuses on the sibling themselves, helping participants explore their individual strengths and needs, build self-esteem and self-advocacy skills, and learn more about autism. It also provides a welcoming space to connect with other children who have similar experiences, build friendships and, most importantly, have fun.
Ages/Life Stage:
Children ages 9–13 who have a sibling who is Autistic or self-identifies as Autistic.
Location:
Sessions are held once per week at Autism Nova Scotia’s Pinwheel Wellness Centre, Bedford Place Mall (1658 Bedford Hwy., Suite 55, Bedford NS).
Description:
SibsCONNECT is centered around the sibling’s experience, but we will include discussions about autism as a way of providing some education, to create positive outlooks regarding autism, and to provide a chance for everyone to talk about their personal experiences with their Autistic sibling.
Our program facilitators and volunteers are either working within the field of autism, have personal experience supporting individuals with autism, or are studying to become a professional in the field. This provides an additional level of support to your child.
The program will run for 10 weeks from September 23 to December 9, on Wednesdays from 6:00-7:30 PM, excluding Nova Scotia holidays (National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Remembrance Day), and there will be one outing scheduled for in November (location and exact date TBD).
Currently, SibsCONNECT is available in the Halifax Regional Municipality and provided in English only.
