Quick Tips for Toothbrushing
Helping little ones build a positive toothbrushing routine early on can make a big difference in teeth and gum health!
These caregiver-friendly tips can make toothbrushing fun:
- Choose a Consistent Time & Place: Pick a spot where a predictable routine can be established. If bedtime is tricky, try separating toothbrushing from the bedtime routine.
- Start with Fun! Play first! Allow some splashing in the sink or playtime with toothbrushes nearby. Building excitement helps pave the way for brushing.
- Take Baby Steps: Focus on one tooth or stroke at a time. Start with the front teeth (they’re often easier!) and stop on a positive note.
- Double the Brushes: Keep two toothbrushes handy. One to hold and one for brushing. This encourages a sense of control while building a brushing routine.
- Add Songs and Games: Make silly faces or sing a fun toothbrushing song to encourage brushing.
- Positive Endings: After brushing, transition to a fun activity right away. Use phrases like, “First brush teeth, then ___,” to highlight what exciting thing comes next.
- Be a Role Model: Demonstrate how to brush. Even incorporate toothbrushing into a doll or stuffed animal play for extra practice.
