National Autism Framework Announcement

Chapters: Annapolis Valley, Bedford-Sackville, Cape Breton Region, Cumberland County, Halifax, Pictou County, South Shore, South West, Strait Area, Truro

Autism Nova Scotia is cautiously optimistic about the release of Canada’s National Autism Framework that was announced today. This is inching closer to supporting the rights, inclusion, and well-being of Autistic individuals and their families across the country, but we also realize more work needs to be done.

While the framework falls short of some key issues, it offers a foundation to build on things like improving access to services, making communities more inclusive, and ensuring Autistic voices are heard. However, a framework of this nature must bring meaningful change to the lives of Autistic individuals and their families, in Nova Scotia and across Canada.

As we take time to fully review the framework, we’re committed to focus on our own goals. This means looking at how the framework can complement our own Autism Action Plan for Nova Scotia, as we continue to work with the Provincial government and engage with our community. Our goal is to create an approach that reflects the unique needs of our province while contributing to the national vision.

At Autism Nova Scotia, we remain dedicated to advocating for policies and practices that directly support Autistic people in living fulfilling and empowered lives. We look forward to being an active partner in this work. We will carefully consider what the National Autism Framework will mean for Nova Scotians and how it relates to our provincial Autism Action Plan. Together, we can build a more inclusive and equitable future for all.
