Summer Transitions

A transition is a change from one activity to another. This could be a task completed as part of a routine, location change, or play activity. Transitioning between activities can be challenging at times.

Here are 6 strategies that can support the transition process:

Give reminders: Provide countdowns like “5 minutes” or “10 more swings.”

Use a transition item: Have portable items like a stuffed animal, toy car, snack, or fidget toy to redirect attention when needed.

Use a timer/alarm: Use your phone or watch to set alarms when transitions occur.

Use Routine language: Try phrases like “first car, then song” or “first walk inside, then snack” to let your child know what’s next.

Use a Visual Schedule: Create a simple schedule with pictures to show upcoming activities.

Sing a transition song: Sing a clean-up or handwashing song, or make up your own to signal a change
