Holiday Wellness Tips from Pinwheel Wellness Centre

The holiday season brings connection, celebration, and new experiences, but it can also bring sensory demands, schedule changes, and social pressure. For many Autistic and neurodivergent adults, these shifts can make the holidays feel overwhelming rather than enjoyable.

At the Pinwheel Wellness Centre, we are committed to creating supportive, accessible wellness experiences year-round. This season, Ribbert, our Pinwheel mascot and Autistic friend, is sharing simple tips to help you protect your energy and navigate the holidays in ways that feel right for you. These tips are also helpful for families, friends, and allies who want to support their Autistic loved ones with care.

1. Masking & Being Yourself

You should never feel pressured to mask your emotions, reactions, or stims. Showing up authentically is an important part of well-being. Loved ones can help by accepting that everyone experiences “holiday joy” differently.

2. Sensory Needs

Lights, noise, crowds, and unpredictable plans can lead to sensory overload. Building in quiet breaks, choosing low-sensory spaces, or simplifying gatherings can make a big difference. Supporters can ask what helps ahead of time.

3. Social Pacing

There is no “right” amount of socializing. It’s okay to choose shorter visits, attend fewer events, or stay home when you need to recharge. Offering flexible options supports both connection and autonomy.

4. Routine Changes

Holidays often disrupt daily rhythms. Keeping a few grounding routines, meals, sleep patterns, or calming activities can provide stability. Clear plans and transition time help ease the change.

Ribbert reminds us that small adjustments and kind words can create a more inclusive season for everyone.
