Honouring Mi’kmaq History Month: The Power of Storytelling

This year’s theme of Mi’kmaq History Month, A’tukwemk aq A’tukowinu’k: Storytelling and Storytellers, reminds us of the power of stories. For the Mi’kmaw people, stories shaped by the land and waters of Mi’kma’ki have been passed down through generations, connecting people to each other, to ancestors, and to knowledge that continues to guide people today.

These stories help us learn, grow, and build belonging. Today and every day, let’s take time to listen, reflect, and honour Mi’kmaw storytellers who keep culture, history, and connection alive.

We know that learning and growth will continue. As an organization, we’re committed to listening, reflecting, and taking steps to better understand Mi’kmaw experiences, history and culture. By continuing to learn, we can build stronger relationships, create more inclusive spaces, and make strides towards ensuring our work is rooted in respect and reconciliation.
