Inclusion in Action
At 32 Kevin has found a place where his focus and attention to detail truly shine. As a Shop Technician at Harding Medical he helps assemble wheelchairs and accessibility equipment that people across Atlantic Canada rely on every day.
Kevin’s path to Harding Medical began with his father Todd, who started working there after retiring. When he learned about a job opening he asked if the team would consider his son who is autistic. Harding Medical did not hesitate; they welcomed the opportunity.
From day one Kevin says he’s felt supported. “They handled the tendencies I have that are not neurotypical a lot better than what I had experienced in the past.”
For Kevin, assembling equipment is a perfect fit.
“I like that I can benefit from my tendency to hyperfocus rather than it being seen as a drawback. It helps me focus on details and follow instructions carefully.”
Craig Bethune, President of Harding Medical, shared that hiring Kevin was a natural decision.
“When Kevin’s father approached me about a job for his son my answer was simple, absolutely. We were not doing anyone a favour we were hiring a skilled employee. Kevin has become a valued part of our team and seeing his success has been a proud moment for all of us.”
Craig added that one of the most meaningful parts of the experience has been seeing the pride and happiness in Kevin’s parents. “Seeing Kevin’s parents so proud and happy show how important opportunities like this are.”
Harding Medical’s inclusive approach shows how powerful it can be when businesses see ability first. Their openness has not only created meaningful employment for Kevin but also set a strong example of leadership and compassion across our community.
