Too Cold to Play Outside? Bring Winter Fun Indoors

QuickStart Quick Tips!

When winter weather keeps everyone inside, sensory play can be a great way to support creativity, regulation, and connection, all from the comfort of home.

This easy DIY sensory dough uses just a few household ingredients and can be adapted to suit different sensory preferences. Whether your child enjoys squishing, rolling, cutting, or simply exploring textures, this activity offers a flexible and calming way to play.

DIY Sensory Dough

You’ll need:

  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • ½ cup hand lotion (choose a scent you enjoy, or unscented)
  • A few sprinkles of glitter (optional)

How to make it:

  1. Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl until well combined.
  2. Once the dough forms a ball and is no longer sticky, remove it from the bowl.
  3. Place it on wax paper or parchment paper and knead until smooth.
  4. If the dough feels dry, add a little more lotion.
  5. If it feels sticky, add a bit more cornstarch.

Time to Play

Once your dough is ready, bring out tools like cookie cutters, rolling pins, sprinkles, or small toys to encourage exploration and creativity. There’s no “right” way to play. Follow your child’s lead and let them engage in the way that feels best for them.

Storage Tips

  • Wrap the dough tightly in plastic wrap and store it in an airtight container.
  • If it starts to dry out, knead in a small amount of lotion to refresh it.

Sensory activities like this can be a simple way to add structure, fun, and comfort to indoor winter days, without needing a lot of preparation or supplies.

Always supervise children during play and ensure the dough is not ingested.
