Winter Dressing Routines

Getting ready to go outside can be a great opportunity to build independence and connection! Try these simple strategies to make dressing fun:

  1. Use First/Then Language: “FIRST boots, THEN outside!” This helps your child understand what’s expected and what comes next
  2. Offer Choices: “Do you want to wear blue or green mittens?” Providing options can help them feel included in the process and increase motivation to participate in the routine.
  3. Make it Fun: “Let’s see who can get dressed the fastest!” Making things fun encourages engagement, communication, and learning.
  4. Get Dressed Together: When you get ready at the same time, your child can watch, copy, and follow along. Thisshows that this is a routine for everyone.

Bonus Tips:

  1. Dress in layers so you can add or remove clothing as needed to stay comfortable.
  2. Notice your child’s comfort. If tags or fabrics feel itchy or irritating, try removing or adjusting them. If they don’tmind, there’s no need to change!
