Exploring Textures with Messy Play

Engaging in messy play activities can help with mealtime, bathtime, and other self-care routines. If they are sensitive to textures, these activities can help slowly make them more comfortable.

Helpful tips to get started:

  1. Model the activity: Try it first and let the child watch how to explore textures in the activity. Show them different ways to engage with the activity.
  2. Respect their decision: Let them decide how they want to interact with the activity and for how long.
  3. Keep cleaning supplies handy: Keep a damp cloth or wipes nearby so the child can clean up quickly if they don’t want to feel the texture anymore.
  4. Explore texture options: Start with dry textures such as pasta, rice or beans. Next, try slightly wet textures like oatmeal or Play-Doh or move on to sticky textures such as yogurt or slime.
  5. Incorporate tools: Using spoons and cups in the activity can help them practice actions outside of mealtimes.
  6. Be patient: Some children may just watch at first, and that is ok. The more times they try the activity, the more likely they are to join.

Following these tips helps create a supportive environment that encourages exploration and comfort with various textures.
