When workplaces are designed with different ways of thinking, communicating, processing information, and interacting in mind, employers can reduce unnecessary barriers and create opportunities for more employees to thrive.
Inclusive workplace design takes a proactive approach. Rather than waiting for an employee to identify a barrier or request a workplace adjustment, employers can build flexibility and accessibility into workplace practices from the beginning.
These approaches can be particularly meaningful for neurodivergent employees, including Autistic employees. At the same time, many inclusive practices, such as clear communication, predictable expectations, flexible approaches, and opportunities to recharge are beneficial for all employees.
Here are five ways employers can begin creating a more inclusive workplace:
1. Create Clear and Flexible Communication Channels
2. Provide Quiet or Sensory-Friendly Spaces
3. Offer Structured Schedules and Clear Expectations
4. Encourage Self-Advocacy and Accommodations
5. Promote Neurodiversity Awareness and Explore Educational Training
