QuickStart Quick Tips!
Summer camp can be an exciting opportunity for campers to build new skills, make connections, and enjoy new experiences. For some, transitioning into a new environment, meeting new people, and adjusting to a different routine can feel overwhelming.
Preparing ahead of time can help make camp transitions smoother and more successful. Here are a few ideas that may help:
Talk about camp routines ahead of time.
Discuss what a typical camp day might look like, including arrival, activities, meals, and pick-up. Knowing what to expect can help reduce uncertainty and build confidence.
Look at photos of the space or staff, if available.
Seeing the camp environment, meeting areas, or photos of staff before the first day can help make unfamiliar places and faces feel more familiar.
Practice wearing camp items.
Try wearing backpacks, swimsuits, hats, or applying sunscreen before camp begins. Practicing these routines ahead of time can help campers feel more comfortable when camp starts.
Pack comfort or sensory items.
Consider sending along items that help your child feel calm, regulated, or secure, such as headphones, fidgets, sunglasses, or a favourite comfort item.
Create a simple visual countdown or schedule.
Using a calendar, countdown chain, or visual schedule can help children understand when camp is coming and what their day may look like.
Plan for rest and downtime.
Camp days can be exciting, but they can also be tiring. Scheduling quiet activities, downtime, or extra rest after camp can help your child recharge.
Building familiarity and predictability can go a long way in helping children feel more confident, comfortable, and ready to enjoy their camp experience.
The QuickStart NS team wishes all campers and families a wonderful summer!
